Since 2011, The ASEAN Dengue Day has been annually commemorated on the 15th of June by the ASEAN Member States in order to raise public awareness of dengue, to mobilize resources for its prevention and control, as well as to demonstrate the commitment of ASEAN in combating the disease1. Dengue, which is a rapidly-spreading mosquito-borne viral disease, has become a major public health problem especially within the ASEAN countries. Factors such as unplanned urbanization, fast-growing population and poor sanitary conditions together with the tropical climates are contributing to the rising number of dengue infections in this region2.

Globally, it is estimated that there are 390 million cases of dengue infections every year with almost 25% of them exhibit clinical symptoms2. As dengue is endemic in many of the ASEAN countries, the disease does not only have public health consequences but also has a significant socio-economic impacts and burden to the region. A collaborative effort for intervention at the community, regional, national and sub-national level is required to combat the disease effectively. Hence, “United Fight Against Dengue” has been chosen as this year’s theme for the ASEAN Dengue Day. Various activities were conducted at national level to commemorate this insightful day. A special issue of E-Health Bulletin can also be accessed online which highlights updates from the ASEAN Member States on current dengue situation, national prevention program, challenges and future priorities.

We hope through this great initiative, dengue disease can finally be defeated and will no longer be a deadly threat in our community. Moving forward “United Fight Against Dengue” together!
